HC issues notice to Shashi Tharoor on Delhi Police’s plea in Sunanda Pushkar death case

Sunanda Pushkar death case: The Delhi Police had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court against the acquittal of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in the death case of his wife, Sunanda Pushkar. The court has issued a notice to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on this petition filed after a delay of about 15 months. The Patiala House Court, in a judgment passed on August 18, 2021, acquitted Shashi Tharoor in the death case. But once again, his difficulties seem to be increasing.

The High Court also issued a notice to Tharoor seeking his response on the police’s application to condone the delay in filing a revision petition against the lower court’s August 18, 2021 order. The court also directed that copies and documents related to the case shall not be provided to anyone except the parties. The High Court has listed the matter for hearing on February 7, 2023.

Shashi Tharoor’s lawyer objected

A single bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma issued a notice to Shashi Tharoor. The Delhi Police had moved the court to hear the matter again, citing a delay of 15 months in the case. Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, appearing for Tharoor, objected to the delay of 15 months in filing the review petition as the discharge order was passed on August 18, 2021. Pahwa further stated that a copy of the revision petition was not given to his client.

Shashi Tharoor’s counsel demanded that the matter of delay be discussed first. After this, the High Court issued a notice to Shashi Tharoor. Pahwa said that the court had accepted the point of hearing on the delay petition.

Please say that Pushkar was found dead on the night of 17 January 2014 in the suite of a luxury hotel in Delhi. The couple was staying at the hotel as renovation work was happening at Tharoor’s official bungalow. Tharoor was charged under provisions related to cruelty and abetment to suicide but was not arrested in the case. And in August 2021, he was acquitted. After the verdict, Tharoor told the court that it was “seven and a half years of severe torture.”
